Virtual Feeding Class for Parents of Children With Down Syndrome

This Virtual Feeding Class is a deep dive into direct therapeutic strategies that you can use as a parent (or professional too!) supporting a child with Down syndrome, from 6 months to 6 years old.

(For live classes) The class runs for 4 weeks. It consists of a 1-hour meeting per week on Zoom, which is recorded, so participants can watch it at a later time if they can’t join live. During the 4 weeks, each family also gets to work directly with Heather on facial stimulation, chewing, and drinking skills. Back-and-forth video sharing between Heather and each family creates a very personalized therapy plan to follow at home for each child.

The Tuesday classes are for adults only. Children need not be present for the classes. The goal is to incorporate the strategies learned in class into each family's routine throughout the week.

Children who are good candidates include messy eaters, new eaters, and limited eaters. Also, if your child has any of the following, they may be a good candidate:

  • Suckles a straw
  • Swallows food whole
  • Doesn’t chew enough
  • Uses the tongue to mash food instead of chewing
  • Gags often
  • Drools
  • Doesn’t lateralize the tongue when eating
  • Has an aversion to textures
  • Can’t drink from a cup/straw
  • Has tethered oral tissue
  • Has low muscle tone
  • Has reduced speech clarity
  • Children wanting to transition off of a G-tube

Parent Testimonials

I loved your video feedback. My husband and I work opposite ends of each other and have a lot of help from our parents. Being able to tell them what I was learning was great but being able to show them my videos and your video feedback was phenomenal. It was easier for them to understand it then from me explaining it. The very next day my mom was implementing all of your feedback.

This lil guy got to take classes with Heather and improved his eating and drinking so much! He learned how to chew so many new foods, start drinking from a cup, and so much more! Thanks so much for teaching us so much, Heather! We are all so pleased and thankful for how quickly he learned new things that can sometimes be harder to figure out!

Heather is a fantastic therapist, but equally important, she has educated us as parents to give us the tools to effectively address the oral motor issues our daughter has on a daily basis. Her experience with children with DS was immediately clear as she expertly identified nuanced issues with our child that had not been noticed from other providers. Most importantly, we feel like Heather really cares about the development of our daughter. Thank you Heather!

I have a two year old daughter with Down syndrome. Shortly after her 1st birthday, we went into shelter in place and have only been to a handful of in person feeding therapy sessions since the beginning of the pandemic. We have had many questions and concerns regarding our daughter’s eating or lack of eating. When I heard Heather did a remote class specifically for children with Down syndrome I jumped on the opportunity. During the four week session, we were reminded of certain exercises and learned new tricks on how to awaken her face and oral cavity to improve her ability to eat at meals. We have seen great improvement at meals including drinking. She was using a honey bear and nosey cup, but incorrectly. We have now moved on to cups and straws and she loves drinking beverages at meals, which is very gratifying. Heather is so positive, encouraging and a great educator. Her experience has really enhanced our ability to care for our daughter’s feeding needs. She has inspired us to learn new skills at the table and explore different foods. I would love to take future classes or private sessions as working remotely, in our own environment, is more natural when gaining new feeding skills.

"Heather is AMAZING. I wish I had better words to describe her. Super smart and passionate! My daughter was 6 months old when we took the zoom class with Heather. At first she was sticking her tongue out when we were trying to feed her, but with expert advice and tips, Hope was able to properly eat from a spoon in just 3 days!! When we run into struggles, such as drinking from the straw, Heather was able to help us troubleshoot and try different strategies! We also learned a wealth of knowledge just in 4 sessions. Heather is not only super knowledgeable, she also loves and genuinely cares for the kids she is helping. I just cannot say enough good things about her services and as a person. You're lucky if you live in the Bay Area!"

Heather has been absolutely wonderful! Let me put it this way.. if you're thinking about and wondering.. DON’T, just do it! Heather is so kind, so patient, so loving. One thing I knew heather was a god sent gift to us was when she treated us like just individuals.. no labels. She supports you like a friend and she helps you succeed and when you do.. she cheers for you!
I learnt so many things from heather during the class.. I learnt that I have a lip tie because she made us examine our mouths and that I have a much higher palette. And from that figured out how to examine my sons mouth and help him. She got him from swallowing his meals to chewing! And great chewing!
I am so glad we found her and gained her knowledge and support. So like I said if you're thinking about.. just do it! You have nothing to loose, just a lot of knowledge and successes to gain!

I can say you are one of the most—if not THE most genuine, approachable, fun teachers...I LOVE learning from you as a professional, but knowing that parents have an opportunity to share cases and learn directly from you is a blessing!!! I have listed your course on a local parent group for children with Down syndrome. Keep being a beautiful beacon of hope for therapists and parents. Your slides and videos and content are top-notch! You get wonderful interaction because it is genuine!

My therapists and I are beyond thankful for Heather's feeding class. As the owner of a pediatric clinic in Morgan Hill, CA my therapists needed more training to equip them in feeling confident to provide feeding therapy. Heather provided us with a comprehensive training that we could complete in our own time; feedback on strategies through video feedback; and practical therapy strategies we could use immediately. This training means we can now help more clients in our community. As a seasoned SLP, I cannot recommend Heather's class enough. You will learn so many strategies and techniques that you never learnt in Grad School!
